The WPA was created by President F. D. Roosevelt and funded by congress as part of the Emergency Relief Appropriation Act of 1935. It employed millions of Americans to carry out public works projects during the Great Depression. Projects included the construction of public roads and buildings, as well as large arts, drama, media, and literacy projects. In total, the WPA spent $13.4 billion on these projects over the 8 years it existed. Many posters from the era advertise the various projects that were funded, the jobs available, and statistics on the effectiveness of the WPA.
