In the mid 1800’s, many seed companies started to appear in America, as transportation improved and postal reforms reduced the costs of shipping seeds and catalogues. As competition increased, seed companies began to promote their seed varieties through superlatives and elaborate covers, in hopes to differentiate themselves. Catalogues were meant for both home gardeners and farmers, but after the introduction of the refrigerated rail car in 1875, a larger commercial fruit and vegetable trade was born. Later, as settlers began to permanently establish, various ornamental plants became popular, and some catalogues even offered dried floral arrangements and supplies for arranging flowers and exhibitions. As the 20th century rolled around, companies began to spread out around the country, and often specialized in specific plants like roses.
