Virginia City appeared as the result of the Comstock Lode silver strike of 1859. It is believed to have been named after James Finney, who found the lode and was nicknamed “Old Virginy” after killing a man and leaving Virginia. At its peak, the city had a population of over 15,000 and was known as the richest city in America. It was also here in 1863 that Samuel Clemens, a local reporter for the Territorial Enterprise, first used his famous pen name Mark Twain. By1898 the silver had run out, and the population drastically declined. Virginia City was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1961, and now receives about 2 million visitors annually.
