The circus dates back to Ancient Rome, where it was a building for exhibiting chariot races, staged battles, jugglers, and trained animals. In 1792, John Ricketts brought the first modern circus to the United States from England. The American circus was reinvented into a traveling circus by P.T Barnum of Barnum & Bailey, and his partner, William Coup, was the first to introduce the circus train as a transportation method. The circus was highly respected in the early 1900s, and was considered to be “the people’s art-form”, with a social status equal to the opera and the ballet.
