Henriette Ronner-Knip [1821-1909] was a Dutch painter who was best known for her paintings of cats and dogs. She was born in Amsterdam into a family of painters, and showed talent from the age of five. At age 11, she began studying under her father, who constantly reminded her of the sacrafices an artist must make to reap the joy of success. As her father lost his sight, Henriette became responsible for providing the family income, and she learned how to create artwork quickly in order to sell them. Throughout her career, Henriette received numerous prestigious awards and honors, but continued to live modestly, despite her popularity. |
