Elizbeth Twining [1805-1889] was an English botanical illustrator. She was born into the Twinings tea merchant family, and was one of 9 children. She learned art and drawing as part of her upper-class education, and was inspired by William Curtis's "The Botanical Magazine" to draw plants and flowers. Twining illustrated several books throughout her career, and most of her original artwork is now housed at the British Museum. She was also a philanthropist, establishing the Saint John's hosipital for the poor and helping to found the Bedford College for Women. |
